I've often wondered..

Just why is the Focus ST so thirsty on Fuel ?

One the face of it .. it seems to have the same fuel thirst as a BMW M3 .. but with quite a bit less power..

Has anyone solved this by remapping ?

What MPG do you get ?

No idea what you're talking about. Mines averaging 27 mpg over 16k miles with a mixed bag of driving. I think that's more than acceptable for a 2.5L 5 cylinder motor which is also remapped.

That sounds pretty good .. I'd heard that 22mpg was normal..

That's good to know .. the original map must be putting in fuel to soften the drivability of something like that ..

Lean is mean .. in my book.

Mind you - I prefer 2 maps ..

1. Economy

2. Power ..

best of both worlds... you decide which

But if dreamscience offer a good power and economy map - then that sounds good biggrin

Turbo - that eats fuel all by itself

Get a dreamscience unit little pricey new but good power gains also better fuel economy as it fulls better at high gears - (so its not using the turbo as much) , very easy to use / change maps , i noticed a big difference when i got one for my rs!

The DS comes with 5 different maps on it, so you can switch between the higher performance and lesser levels to see which suits you best.

Im not sure how ford set the ECU as standard but pretty much everyone i know who has had a remap is getting better mpg afterwards, I average about 26 mpg in mine although I have had it down to 12 a couple of times biggrin

I don't think it's quite as thirsty as people make out. Personally I don't take the indicated mpg generated by the cars OBC as gospel, never have really. Also, as pointed out by someone else on another thread, it seems have a relatively small tank (don't know the exact size so I may be wrong). £40.00 of 99super brims it at the moment.

Btw mine is standard at the moment. Bluefin stage 1 on the way......

i have covered 60 odd k in mine, returns 35 on the motorway if you keep it 60, about 30 if your at 70, totall combined for mine over the year based (65k in 12 months) on fuel in against miles done is 30.1mpg,( one trip i managed to hit 40 mpg on the trip computer, think it was playing up)

I would say the mpg is just about acceptable unless you do a whole heap of urban crawl.
My daily commute nets me somewhere between 24 - 26 average (motorway & crawl) and I recently did a 400 mile trip and averaged over 30mpg with an average speed of 60+ (so as you can imagine real speeds were generally a little higher) - IMO that's ok.

The ST really suffers on the local stuff and the MPG doesn't seem to get appreciably worse if you up the speed, even at levels where you would start to expect a decent tail off.

Yes - that feature sounds like a agreat idea..

Just a bit weird that the standard Ford map seems to waste fuel .. perhaps it's mapped for the worse fuel imaginable ..

Talking of fuel .. what do you guys run in your ST's

Normal or Super ?

Mind you - I though most OBC's inflated the MPG figure to make it seem better .. my Renault 182 certainly does.

I would have to say its the turbo, forced induction petrol motors just seem to go through the fuel regardless of their power output. In my experience normally aspirated engines with more power can return the same MPG if not more. Your M3 is a good example.
