Focus Diesel gearbox squeak

Hi all

Got a Focus TDCi 1.8 53 plate, ~50,000m

Noticed over winter my gearbox feeling a bit tighter and notchier than before, didn't think much of it but now summer's here and the windows come down I can hear a squeak as the box goes into gear

Happens in all gears but 1st is the tightest and loudest squeaking

Any ideas? Preferably cheap ones...

It might be the selector cables, quite a common problem on your focus.

is the linkage cable driven on the focus?

i think it's the shifting linkage, as the noise is exactly the same when the engine isn't running

going to have the pot of grease out on saturday and see what's dried up in there
