I have been looking harder and harder at the FRST until I have now came to the point in which I am really tempted......

What are they like to drive?
Whats the handling/ power like compared to say a clio williams or a 205 and any other candidates of that nature?
I am assuming in standard guise they are about saxo VTS pace what with almost identical power output etc etc.
There will be an 'amount' of fettling involved, to what end I do not know.......yet. I have heard that 200+ bhp is fairly easy to eek out of the little 1.6 engine, and for big power 2.1 ZVH conversion's are pretty straightforward?

Any input from you guys.... good or bad is much appreciated smile

Hi i have had two one pretty standard and one seriously modded they are great fun to drive and have a good amount of power as standard they feel faster than a vtr/vts as they are more basic plus when you put your foot down it responds not like modern cars that talks to the computer before deciding whether to accelerate or not

Remember you wont get power steering and they can be pretty heavy on the steering.

There are loads of mods available fairly reasonably on the likes of fleabay

There are still a good amount out there to be had but do your research before buying they suffer heavy from the dreaded tin worn especially underneath and the rear arches the worst place for them to go is round the petrol filler cap

they are also quite common to go at the bottom of the a pillars

Also be cautious of old immobolisers the wiring looms on these can be a nightmare if they have been chopped about

The two i had were great fun to drive and i would definitely recommend them

nice one redface)

Well once I have sold my bike then I will be scouting out a decent example then!

I prefer not having power steering (I used to have a 205 non PS) smile

i had an xr2i 16v and drove a friends rs turbo which was very quick, i preferred my xr2i to my friends 1.9 205 gti`s as did my friend with the pug.
general consensus on here though is that they arent as good but in my experience they are better and feel more solid and are obviously much more tuneable and with a much better interior.

as said the rust is the big problem, around the fuel cap, under the bodykit and underneath the car. although most old cars rust like this too.

if you find one with little or no rust you are on to a winner but have a really really good poke around as its an expensive problem to solve unless you have a very friendly bodyshop.

If you cant find a clean one why not build your own from a standard mk3 at least you know everything thats gone into it and its more fun

I have the engine from one in my Quantum. It's had a full rebuild but just to standard spec at +.5 so it's somewhere near the original 130hp they were supposed to have.

I also have a Mk2 Fiesta with the engine from an RS1800 in it, again 130hp but 16v - it's much better lower down. I think the XR would have the Quantum in a fair fight

However, put the two together in a ZVH turbo arrangement and you've got some serious power available, fairly solid bottom end and a tuneable top, with a T3 or larger turbo, you're easily looking upwards of 220'ish hp

I bought a full car for the engine and broke what I didnt need. Drove it back to Notts from Portsmouth and it was fairly lively, not earth shattering but quick enough. You'll need to look at replacing the T2 for a larger or hybrid turbo if you're after more than 7 psi, or adding a 165 chip to standard injectors. More power than that will need a bigger turbo, 195 chip and different injectors. Have a look at fiestaturbo.com for more info

Yeah I found that site a few days ago and its very helpful, I think first things first would have to be the usual breathing mods, ERST T3, beige injectors, fuel pump etc etc and a 195 chip.

But I have definately been weighing up the costs of a ZVH conversion as it seems a lot of bang for your buck.
