Hi all,

My 54 plate Mondeo TDCi 130 has started making what I can only describe as a rubbing noise, which seems to come from the back end. This only happens at bang on 70 mph and gets better when the speed is above or below this magic 70 mph mark.

It's been getting progressively worse so needs sorting but would love an idea of what it is. The car has done nearly 90K.

Would it be something to do with a worn bearing or joint on one of the back wheels??

is it like a droneing noise you can usually tell if its rear wheel bearings buy jacking up the rear wheel chocking the fronts taking off the hand brake and spinning the wheel you can ususally hear it.

If its more of a rubbing could be bearing or possibly brake shoe has broken up. just be cautious if its a wheel bearing if they start breaking up they can weld themselves to the hub which turns a simple job into a nightmare

hope this helps

Dont worry to much about the stub axle it all comes as one unit which bolts to the rear hub with the downside being that it makes the part more expensive. I would first check the rear brakes and also that the tyres are not out of shape both of which can cause the noise.

If its the tyres make sure you check your rear subframe bushes as this is a very common problem on your shape of mondeo and does cause excessive uneven wear on the rear tyres.
