I test drove a mondeo tdci estate 115 2002 but the steering seemed jerky the bloke at the garage said that it just a bush underneath the dash that wants changing and that he would get it done if I bought the car. Is this correct and is it a common fault ?

Never buy a car from a dealer who leaves all the faults and only offers to fix the ones you find.

Might need a rack, or could be the top mounting bushes/bearings on the strut tops they seize up and then they brake the suspension spring, also steering tube can need greased.
