Ford Fiesta - 2006. "Heavy Brakes"

A friend has just called me saying that her ABS light has popped on and the brakes feel much heavier.
When i've been in cars with the ABS light popping on, it's always been down to a sensor in the wheel, but never caused any difference in the feel of the car until under heavy braking (due to the disabled abs).
Does anyone know what could cause this? and whether its safe to drive
