Just a quick question, looking at getting a C-Max at the moment. Car will be used for Family and a few UK based Holidays each year.

Is the 1.6, being newer and 16v and I beleive a French engine be better long term than the 1.8?

Performance stats not much between the two (on paper) Don't really need or see the point in going for the 2.0, but willing to be proved wrong.

have test driven the 1.8, testing the 1.6 tomorrow.

Thanks for any info.

1.6 is a more modern engine and comes in 90 and 110hp flavours, its a light engine and happy to rev but is much nicer in more powerful trim. Economy in the mid to high 50's is easy to achieve and it gets better if you follow trucks. My car has the 90hp spec motor that has a bluefin giving it between 100-110 but in a fiesta so isn't slow at legal speeds and returns 55-60mpg and in 45,000 miles I've replaced headlight bulbs, 4 tyres and a set a brake discs, the engine has been faultless.

1.8 is an old engine, heavier and not much better than the 110 1.6. It is the engine that will being the biggest discount from the dealer as they are less desirable but you will be stung come resale time because of this. Mid 40's is what most seem to get from these MPG wise.

2.0 is a big improvement over the above, have driven a couple of Cmax with the 2.0 and it makes for a lovely crusier that has enough left for A and B road overtaking. This is the only diesel in the focus range ford fit a 6 speed box to. These manage mid 40's but the extra power and refinement of the 6speed box make it a worthwhile price to pay. If I was doing trips fully loaded or with 2 adults and luggage in this size car then this would be my choice.

If you don't care about anything other than running costs then a 100hp 1.6 is the way to go. If progress is your thing then the 2.0, either way unless you get a mega deal on a 1.8 (£1500-2000 below other engines) then its not the best option.
