Xr2i ...missfire ..please help!!
Discussion
Hey everyone, im John and I have a 1990 H reg CVH 8v Xr2i.
I have just spent the last month rebuilding the engine of my little fez..
New pistons, rings, head skimmed, full head overhaul and a brand new kent cam...
I did this because the engine was miss-firing when it started and will not drive ..plus it needed a good service..
I have renewed all the gaskets, done an oil and filter change, new spark plugs , coil pack and HT leads all of which have a good spark!
I thought it may be a fueling problem, so i took the fuel line of the injector rail and turned the car over into a plastic container. it seemed to be flowing out fine and very clean.
when I manage to get the car to start the more I put my foot on the accelertor the less it revs and wants to cut out, but if I tap the peddle quickly it seems to pick up, but will not go past around 3-4000 rpm.
also if I take the vacume hose off the EFI unit going to the MAP sensor it seems to sit and idle on its on fine and will rev satationary all the way to the limiter, but still has no real power.
I have changed the MAP sensor with no luck.. I am really puzzled can anyone help as i have spent alot of money on this car and its getting to me now...
Im pretty sure its nothing mechanical .. so its either electrical or one of the sensers...
I also have pics if anyone wants to see the car going back together,,,
PLEASE HELP!!!
cheers John

John,
I've got the same car and engine which i race. I'm not an engine expert but i'm learning fast!
My best suggestion would be the injectors as it seems you've looked into everything else.
The other item i'd check is the throttle cable where it mounts to the throttle body. The cable can pull through (giving say 80% throttle at full pedal) however this could potentially confuse the ecu via the TPS.
I maybe talking rubbish but i had an injector problem on mine and it sounded similar to the issues you've got.
Good luck, Steve

Hey mate cheers for the reply...
Well I can 100% say its not the injectors because ive had the entire engine apart and had the injectors sitting in meths for 2 days and then gave them a good clean... and all the connectors on them are good.
But for the accelerator cable i will check but it more a miss fire than loosing power a mechanical way i think...
Im pretty sure it has to be fuel related or some sort of ignition faliure... Its starting to pee my off now to be honest lol...
I think the best thing to do now is get a mobile mechanic round with a diagnostic kit.. im stumped..
Where abouts do you race anyway mate?

hmm, sorry i can't be more help really.
As i said, i'm still learning so if you're stumped i will be too.
I race the Northern saloon chamopinship. Mostly croft but also Cadwell, knockhill and oulton.
I have a load of spare XR2i gear kicking about. and i do mean a lot - enough for a spare car or two if i had a shell. if you need anything drop me a line and i might be able to help.
cheers, steve

hi John,
good to see familiar sight! i need all the tips on rebuilding these things i can get.
Just go into racing this year, been wanting to for a long time. It's relatively cheap but costs go up when you have a weekend like the one i've just had.
3 laps into saturdays race lots of steam and 120 degrees showing. not good.
This was coupled with a knocking from the bottom undoubtedly caused by oil starvation.
I know what i have to do to the sump to stop the problem re-occurring, but i also need to re-build the bottom end.
I haven't taken the head off yet, but i suspect head gasket failure caused the overheating.
So where's the best place to get all the bottom end parts i need? main and big end shells, the all the oil seals for the cranks etc? does anyone do a kit like this with all the bits?
I'm hoping because i stopped it quickly that the crank is ok to take new shells. if it's knackered and needs a regrind i'll have to send it away. any tips on where to go?
