Focus RS Mk2 Running in process
Discussion
Hi,
Just wondered what Ford have told people about running in their new focusses? I have heard 5000 Rpm max for the first 500 miles. However, having just had a test drive wih a main dealership in a car with a 190 miles on the clock, the dealer didn't mention it, consequently i spent he whole test drive hovering around the red line!
Does this mean the running in process is not that important? Or does it mean don't buy an ex-demonstrator?!
Thoughts?

I heard that it 5000 rpm for the 1st 500 miles, which is what i did in mine. My dealer mentioned nothing about running in & the handbook doesn't mention anything either! Don't think they really need to be run with modern engineering techniques these days! Dont forget that running gear, brakes, tyres etc still need running in too! How did you find the test drive fella?
A very respected person who now resides in the USA advised me to "warm it up and then nail it!". This guy worked for Ford powertrain developments at Dunton and worked on the CDW27 program (Mondeo). You do realise how these cars will be treated at the factory and docks?! (IIRC every car is red lined on the factory dyno anyway?).

^ I have heard this as well. There are people that swear by nailing it from the word go (once warm) and that it can yeild an engine that produces more power etc...but I have always stuck to running in gently for 800ish miles
I guess i should add that i did this, my engine had two new heads and cam shafts @ 1400 miles!!! Seriously though, mine was just bad i think, i've heard of a few people with the same fault on the V6(ticking noise when hot). Thanks chaps,
Gareth, the test drive was fantastic. I wasn't really prepared for it to be as quick as it was. The torque was incredible, real pull in any gear. It may sounds petty, but even the steering wheel made me smile! really tactile and good to hold, and the steering itself had a good feel. It was the noise that really sold it though, brought a grin to my face that i thought only a motorbike could!
Seats were really good too, I'm 6' 4 and had no problem with the driving position.
All that and a hatchback! What a car.
Just have to wait till flamin March now!!
Yours looks gorgeous by the way Gareth, any chance of PMing me some more pics so I've got something to lust after for the next 7 months please?
