FOCUS ST - Noisy Turbo
Discussion
Hello There,
I have a Focus ST (220 version) and it has now done nearly 60K miles on a 56 plate.
A few thousand miles ago I gave the car to the dealer complaining of a Turbo that has developed a new whine when it is only on full boost. It sounds almost like a loud clicking rather than the usual whistle. It does however drive absolutely fine with no loss of power.
The guys there drove it and agreed they had not heard the noise before and would investigate..
Anyway long story short they decided that there was nothing wrong with it because Ford told them it was quite common in ST's. This only came back when they tried to replace it under warranty.
Has anyone else had this issue or could I get the turbo checked by someone independantly?
My warranty expired on 1st September, however they have said they will leave my job card open for a short while given I reprted the problem in time.. I am just worried they are fobbing me off to avoid a warrenty job.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks All
JD

My focus ST that I had before the Mustang had 27k on the clock (I had it from new) earlier this year it developed a boost problem i.e you would put your foot down the boost needle would bury it's self in the end stop then it would violently dump the pressure leaving me with hardly any power. It also had an annoying tendency not to go into any gear at all sometimes (hot or cold). Eventually after going back to ford twice (their first attempt was an ECU re-flash) they booked it in to have a proper look at it; as it was under warranty I sold it back to Evans Hallshaw at trade in price so I could get my Mustang.
Being the curios sort I rang them up a few weeks later (after the allotted slot to fix the car) it turned out one of the turbo bearings had gotten damaged (swarf or grit they said) and was on the verge of collapse - they replaced the whole turbo and all the associated sensors. As for the gearbox - they replaced the syncros!!
Get them to have a proper look at it if the turbo is on it's way out get shut of it at an auction as that will cost an arm and a leg to replace.
ETA: I was running no mods to the engine/drive train etc either.

Thanks Matt.
I don't run any mods on the car either. I am gonna take the car to a turbo specialist I think for a diagnosis and then take that to Ford to sort..
I would love tp partx but sadly one of the major banks owns a rather large slice in it at the moment!!
Thanks for your advice though.

the vast majority of people seem to have no problems with them at all, even those running 300bhp + are having no issues.
What perplexed me the most is that the damage was supposedly on the turbine side of the turbo, all I can think is that it was a duff bearing from the start.
