Hey,

Got a 52 Ford Focus 2.0 Zetec, 78,000 mile.

Basically got in it this morning to drive to work and noticed a very faint whinning noise coming from the rear offside (I think) when I don't apply any acceleration. Basically coast up to junctions in gear or down the road and its whins. Slower the car goes the quiter it gets. At a stand still no noice at all.

I suspect wheel bearing, but it does sound very similiar to the whin a gearbox makes only louder.

Any advice as to what it could possibly be?

Due its MOT next month and really would not like a fail on something stupid!

Ive got the same car, I had the very same problem (I left it alot longer tho and got very bad!) It turned out to be a wheel bearing, cheap and easy fix, D.I.Y if your feeling confident.

Yes it's most likely the bearing (couldn't be much else really).
If you're doing it yourself and it's got abs (which I'm sure it will have) beware of the fact that the abs sensor actuator is in the bearing.

These are easily damaged, and it's possible to put the bearing in the wrong way round as well.

If one bearing has gone the other probably isn't far behind as my son-in-law discovered far from home on a motorway.

Equine noises should never be ignored wink
