Focus Zetec oil burning smell when stationary

Hi there
Have a problem with my '00 1.8 petrol Zetec estate. I get a whiff of fumes in the cabin when the car is stationary (don't seem to get it when the car is on the move). The smell reminds me of the burning oil smell I used to get with my mini in the bad old days.
There's no sign of an oil leak an no oil being used (burnt by the engine).
In the last MOT advisary they stated a slight exhaust blow at the front join. Could this be exhaust gasses coming into the cabin that get 'blown away' whilst moving? The previous owner also said that they'd replaced the rocker cover gasget as it was leaking (onto the manifold at the front of the engine?) although surely any residual oil would have burnt off by now (600 miles into ownership).
