Hi,

My great aunt has a 2008 fiesta zetec (bought new) she has done 4750 miles in it. Recently she has been complaining of a burning smell from under the bonnet, I would just like to say she doesnt ride the clutch. It smells to me like clutch, she took it to the dealer she bought it from and they said it was clutch too, it still works well and the biting point is where it should be. She took it to the local mot garage in the town and they said it was a mixture of the cat and paint burning off the engine because it was so new?. They took it for a run to clean it out and it was fine for a week until today when there was a strong smell of burning from under the bonnet again. I don't think its possible to damage/burn out a clutch in 4750 miles??? Is this a common fault?? We would appreciate any suggestions of a possible cause of the smell?

Regards

Rob

Well if theres a Cat on the engine no wonder it smells funy, biggrin

but more seriously,

I can't see why there'd be paint burning on the engine, surely Ford use high-temp paint on the engines, or just no paint at all.

The brakes aren't binding are they? My mk4 fiesta had that, much older at 90k miles, but it produced the same smell as clutch burning.

I'd assume its still under warranty as its only a 2008 car, so if Ford think its a clutch can't they change it and then when the smell doesn't go away, you can get them to really find out what the problem is.

Like what you did there biggrin

Ford say that if they found the clutch was worn when taken out rather than faulty it would be £1000!! I will check the brakes today, did yours show any other signs of binding like pulling up unevenly etc?

Thanks for the suggestion!

On mine, it was only one side that was binding. The caliper wasn't sliding back properly.

I never noticed it pulling, but, on uphil sections, if you changed from say 2nd to 3rd, you could definatly feel the car slowing and feel as if it had lost power (because it was braking).

If its biting correctly, and isn't slipping, I don't see how Ford could possibly say that it was worn.

And I've just thought, theres not a pipe or something thats coming in contact with the manifold or soemthing else hot is there.

Very strange on such a new car, its unbelievable that Ford don't seem to want to help, but then I guess thats the way everything is going these days.

If it's only done that many miles then the engine could still be tight as a ducks ass, i know all the Ford Ka's i had as loan cars at service times had a bit of a warm smell!!(all of those had done around that many miles).

I've got a Mazda2 (Fiesta in a different skin) and yesterday I noticed the the clutch "sticking" in the open position...

...after reading this I get the feeling that it might just be a low quality clutch than a user issue.
