The manual with Ford's are pretty good, do they not have one?

On an '02 car (assuming it's the mk6 shape that's just been replaced), easiest way is to remove the light unit if you can't quite get around to doing it from behind the headlight with it in situ. Just a case of undoing 2 or 3 torx screws and pulling on the lamp unit to remove, obviously undoing the connector as well.

Yes it's the model that has been replaced. There is a washer bottle behind the headlight unit on the drivers side and looks awkward to get to. If i undo the torx screw's, the bumper doesn't need to come off as well does it?

No, definitely not. At most, you might have to remove the front grille, but that's just a case of unclipping and rolling it towards you from the top. If it were an ST then it would have been far more trickier (really awkward front bumper that gets in the way), but you'll find it quite easy on this one, trust me.

I had a couple of mk6 Zetecs before the ST so I should hope i'm not leading you down the wrong path. I'm afraid you'll have to sort out the Torx size, sorry, but I have a feeling it's something odd like a 27 and IIRC it was even possible to get away with a flat.
