The TDCi engines can suffer from Dual Mass Flywheel issues, which could cost a fair amount.

Do you specifically need a diesel? A Mondeo 2.0 petrol will be fairly economical?

It really depends what you want it for...I'd say the Mondeo is more confortable and better suited to longer journeys...but it is still pretty good when you want to press on a bit.
The focus will be less well equipped (compared to a Ghia X Mondeo) but if you compare a 2.0 Focus with a 2.0 Mondeo it'll be a bit nippier, but probably not quite as comfortable on a long run.

And obviously the Mondeo is a bigger and therefore more spacious car

The facelift cars are a nicer place to be if the budget stretches that far...

Spec hierarchy sounds about right. Few special editions based on Zetecs (Graphite?) around as well.

Ghia became Titanium at some point... although there was a cross-over period.

That is the right line up for the age of car you're looking for (bar the ST of course). The facelift was in 2004 and if you don't mind a car with a higher mileage, you can pick them up for under 4K. I think the car looks nicer inside and out with the facelift and you can nice extra's like a sony muti-changer on Ghia and Ghia X

The Titanium didn't come about until later....maybe 05/55?!

I'm assuming its got slightly more than 5,000 miles on the clock?

I'd imagine that if you're trading your car in and he's giving you 1,000 quid aswell, you're not going to get the best deal. You should go on one of the free price guide websites and find out how much that Mondeo is worth, and also how much your car is worth
