Been going to look at an escos over the coming weeks and have been trying to find a buyers guide or at least a heads up about things to watch out for / common faults etc but to no avail

Long enough in the tooth to spot panel gap, crash damage and all things hpi but more interested in mechanicals, electrics, suspension etc

as usual..any help gratefully received

gearboxes chater/rattle when in neutral, this is normal and not a fault also the hydralic tappets take longer to close up when started from cold than is the normal.
fuse box faults are common check all the electrics work.
oil leaks from the front and the back of the engine.
if the car is running more than 300 bhp all the componants involved will have thier live span reduced .
the small turbo model is a better drive but cant be tuned more than 300 bhp.
ps i have owened one for 12 years.

Thanks for that phil. Oil leaks? I know the tray underneath stops you looking from below but am I able to see anything with the bonnet popped?

cheers

for huge amounts of knowledge it would be worth registering on escortrscosworth.com if you haven't already, there are cars coming up for sale on there that are known by the members and what that lot don't know between them is not worth knowing wink

for my little bit I would suggest ensuring that all the front spoilers upper and lower and side hockey sticks are present and in good condition because replacing these for originals will be impossible or VERY costly, although carbon items are available.

check the rear boot for bubbling paint and inside the lip on the front wings for rust, the worst place for rusting is underneath the side skirts a few owners have had a bit of shock when these have been removed, thus buying a car that has a known history is invaluable.

good luck, I sold mine 8 months ago and replaced it with my Focus RS but still miss the old girl now!

Zeb, get yourself registered at www.escortrscosworth.com and ask the same question there smile Shed loads of information there and a reasonable chance that any car you may be viewing may be known by somebody on that site.

Congratulations on an exceptional choice of car to purchase biggrin

..
no not from above you will have to look underneath.
if the oil leak is any size the tray will have oil in it so you will get oil on your finger s if run them along the edges of the various holes in the base of the tray,
i would not let a small leak put you off as it is very common

Did you have a look at the cars for sale section on the Escos Site ? Couple of good ones on there at the moment smile

What are your preferences...... Big Turbo model or Small Turbo version etc ?
