Black smoke mondeo tdi
Discussion
Advice welcome my mates 03 mondeo is blowing black smoke and he reckons has lost performance,it has came up with no faults on diagnostics and has been told it could be the egr clogging up but has had the egr closed off by inserting a bolt somewhere and it made no difference. His mechanic seems stumped i aint mechanically inclined but have read a split in a hose can cause black smoke on a diesel but unsure if it affects power maybe depends on how bad the split.Any help to point him in the right direction would be gratefull.
Check to make sure that the big rubber pipe from the intercooler behind the grille to the EGR is secure at both ends and also that this same pipe has no splits in it.
Both common causes of the problem you mention although splits especially if small can be difficult to spot. A new pipe from Fraud is about £40.

What he said....
This happened to mine. Like a battleship laying smoke and down on power.
Diesel independent put it on diagnostics and changed the fuel rail, before finding the split pipe. This made no difference, but he insisted a switch-on pressure fault was indicated.
I'm not convinced...
New pipe fixed it.
Edit...
On another occasion, same independent diagnosed a duff injector, with the other three "so close to to
tolerance they'll fail soon".
Being cautious after episode 1, I tried another place that fitted a recon injector for £200 and said the other three were ok. They were, I've done another 50,000+ miles on them.
