Probably the nylon speedo drive in the gearbox, they often get chewed up over time and cause the symptoms you describe and is very easy to check. Could also be a sticky cable on a vehicle of that age.
Be warned though if it keeps chewing them up it can be a problem with the bearings in the gearbox.

How easy are they to change - its incredibly annoying?Be warned though if it keeps chewing them up it can be a problem with the bearings in the gearbox.
