Opinions on a 1.8 zetec mondeo

Unless it's broken, you can't really go wrong with a Mondeo.

I've had two.

I'd say go for a 2.0 though, as the 1.8 is a tad sluggish.

I'd agree with killsta...you can't go far wrong and at that age, you'll be getting plenty of car for your money. I'd go for the 2.0 too if you can and get as much spec as you can too.

I replaced a 2008 Lancer 170hp diesel with a 2005 Mondeo 1.8 LX. I prefer the Mondeo. Handles better, quieter, more comfortable. OK, it's not nearly as fast as the VAG PD engined Lancer, but it's acceptable. Getting 35mpg out of the Mondeo, compared to 44mpg from the Lancer.
