XR2I ENGINE SWAP ADVICE HELP NEEDED
Discussion
Hi All
I am swapping the engine from my xr2i for another one from a running xr2i as the head blew on mine.
Few questions i have which i would be greatful if anyone could help with.
I want to keep my original gearbox so ideally would want to leave that in remove the engine and then refit new engine
My friend who is helping and has some experience of doing these things has said remove the engine and gearbox swap them over then drop back in but this means pulling off the driveshaft losing gearbox oil seperating the ball joints etc would it not be easier to just leave my original gearbox in and just take out the engine????
in the workshop manual it says you can remove the engine without removing the gearbox it states if i unbolt bell housing and mounts i can slide the engine across and then lift it out there only seems to be about an inch or 2 between the timing belt cover and the wheel arch is this going to be enough room to get the engine off the spindal in the gearbox and up???
Any help or tips from people would be very much appreciated good or bad

You need to remove the lower crank pully & exhaust manifold (ideally the rad to) then there is 'just' enough room to pull the engine off the gearbox, then twist the engine in the bay (no1 towards you) & you can lift it out. Be worth putting something on the inner wing to protect your paint while doing it.

The crank pulley you are saying to remove is this the one that that goes to the starter motor?? do i also need to remove the alternator and timing belt cover??
Really dont want to remove the gear box but is it easier??
the crank pulley is the one that drives the alternator and yes alternator needs to come off first. It is just as easy to do and leaves the box in as like you say saves messing with the suspension etc Really dont want to remove the gear box but is it easier??

sorry another quick question when refitting the engine it is possible the gear box internal cog bit (sorry dont know its correct name) will not match up with the engine one can i simply move this by pulling the alternator pulleya small amount to move it round tp then slide it on??
As long as the clutch is aligned properly you should not have any issues getting them back together
Sorry another quick question the new engine i am putting in still has the alternator pulley on, alternator has been removed however i have been unable to remove the pulley dont have an air gun and as the engine is removed from the gearbox every time i try and undo it its basically turning the engine over is there no way it will go back in with this fitted or will it go but jut need a bit more shoving and pushing.
Thanks for help so far

it will go in with the pulley on but its a bit tighter so more chance of damaging the paint. Thanks for help so far
