Looking to buy 2002 Mondeo ST220
Discussion
Hi All,
I've been lurking but this is my first post here, so hi!
We are looking to buy an ST220 - having lusted after them for 8 years, it is finally becoming a possibility, yay! Insurance quoted at only £360 for the year, fully comp
I've seen a 2002 (pre facelift) up for sale at £4450, 51k, 3 owners...looks in nice nick. Is this a good deal? Haven't found out about history yet and if it's patchy then I won't bother going to drive it.
What problems exist? I've heard about the water pump and the DMF failures, were these only on the pre facelift 5 speed models, or do these issues still happen on the later ones? I've also seen one on a 54 plate at £5300, this does seem a better deal and it has the 6 speed box, but its pretty far away and the first one is only round the corner.
Any advice and owning experiences would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

I think the DMF is only the diesels, but I could be wrong...
Otherwise, suspension bushes go every 50k or so, you can tell this from the springs knocking over bumps/cats eyes, etc...
Front springs also snap occasionally, their about £40 fitted at a garage... (Maybe not on ST220s but both have gone on my 1.8 Zetec at 60k and 70k respectively...)
Also, the weather membrane in the doors can occasionally split, which will damp the carpets (thats a 2 hour job with the right tools and some bathroom sealent)...
I think something on the V6s are prone to fail in the engine, but I cant remember exactly what it is - possibly the crankshaft, but I could be wrong)...
But other than the usual stuff, they are fairly hardy machines... Id say go for it, if I had the cash for one and a couple of million spare for insurance, I'd have one tomorrow
