ford type 9 gearbox problem. sierra,capri etc

i just brought a p100 with a type 9 box and the gear stick moves around all over the shop finding a gear is a mission. help! lol the saddle clip was smashed to bits and the plastic ball joint bit on the stick looks pretty mashed up is this the cause or would a fault with the box have caused the stick to wear??
