My wife has a mark 3 mondeo 2.2 tdci titanium x, it goes through front tyres at the most unbalevable rate, she gets around 7000 miles a pair, had it all checked out and ford garage say all is ok. is this normal?

No. How are they wearing? If you drive around corners and roundabouts fast all day then the outer edges will wear.

No... I get 15k out of a set of fronts, and don't hang about.

I can't comment on my Mk3 as it hasn't been used enough but i get about the same on the Mk1, 15-20K miles.

she's not a fast driver and doesn't push them. The wear is even right across the tyre the preasures are always checked and ok. Spoke to a few sales reps who have them and say their tyre wear is high too. Just wondered if there was a way to solve it? What make of tyre's do you run, hers are vardeistine, (I no that isn't spelt correctly!)

Vredstein?

I'm running Yokos which are soft...!!

Hankooks wear well, but might be worth paying for the Conti Sport 3s.

Hard wearing would be Michelin or Continental in my experience.

I look to be getting 15k out of fronts on mine (1.8 petrol running 16" rims). Far higher wear compared to any of my Vauxhalls, and some of those were over 200hp.

I got 5k miles out of the Vred Sessantas on my Focus ST, 7k sounds pretty good to me. Not sure about other models, but I suspect they do some fairly soft rubber.

Does your missus drive like a sales rep?

Do the Vredestein's have a tread wear rating on the sidewall? It's a US standard but many tyres have it anyway. Some OEM tyres are really low - like 140 etc. A tyre that is 280 should last twice as long. Most "eco" tyres are towards 400.

It's largely about how the power is used though - I used to be a sales rep and we had guys (me!) who could get through tyres in under 10K miles but one guy was famous for never having tyres changed (we used to buy the car and sell them at just under 60K miles).

Watch the tyre load rating... if they're not XL, then they will wear more quickly from what I have been told.

I / dad got 16k on the front of out ST TDCi. They were the standard size 225/40/18 XL Uniroyal Rainsport 2. Rears have done about 21k and still fine.

After all these posts i think i'll book it into another garage for a double check.
My good lady does not drive fast atall, we sold a mondeo st220 for this one and got a good 15000 miles out the front tyres.
The people i've spoken too reckon that its a heavy engine in these mondeos and thats half the problem, i'm not convinced scratchchin
This is the forth set of tyres and the car is at around 26500 miles,
idea think i'll sell it and buy another 220.

I would wink The 220 engine weighs about the same. Granted the diesel pumps out more torque but still.

The heavy engine wouldn't acount for only 7000 miles out of the tyres. I have the same 2.2 TDCI, tweaked for more torque and hooned everywhere mercilessly I still get 12-15k out of a set. Is she a smooth driver (throttle and clutch on the Mondy aren't the easiest to modulate)? Though even that wouldn't account for the wear you've decribed. Get another opinion and maybe try some different tyres.

Try the Michelin Energy tyres - very hard wearing, although not great in the wet according to some.
