XR4x4 clutch pedal - how to remove

Hi, has anyone managed to remove the clutch pedal from a 2.9 XR4x4 to renew the adjuster quadrant? Haynes manual says it slides left off its shaft, but there is a support to the left of the pedal which prevents sideways movement, and there's not enough room to push the whole shaft to the left from the brake pedal end - I'm stumped.
