2000 1.25 Fiesta smelling of petrol...

The smell is stronger inside the car, and when I drive off from cold, I get to the junction at the top of my road (about 300 metres) and the car cuts out as I slow down...
When I restart, it's juddery for about 20 seconds, but then it appears to run fine (although still smelling of petrol...)
Anybody care to take an educated guess as to what is wrong??
