mk1 ford focus timing belt

Hi , need some advice please.

The timing belt has broke on the mrs car.

She was on her way back from london and parked up to go into a shop. She then went to start it but nothing happened.

She called the AA and they confirmed the belt had snapped.

What are the chances that its done some damage to the engine?

Its a 1.8 petrol BTW.

100% chance it has.

Will have hit valves need to lift the head off & inspect for damage, i have seen these engines break pistons when it happens but as yours appears to have happened on start up they should be ok & it will just be a few valves
