They are known for being thirsty but I'm not sure if that's missing the point of what they are for. Also the petrol and road tax costs are (I think) priced in and help to explain why they cost a fair bit less than the same age BMW 330ci. I was torn between getting the st220 and the 330 two years ago and bought the 330, but the choice had nothing to do with fuel costs. It was more about the rwd balance and the more instantly torquey feel of the BMW. But I have had much higher depreciation on the 330. Plus you can also find more difference between maintenance costs of one car vs another even of the same model just by getting a really good example. I have driven another ST recently which felt better than the one I tried before. It even felt quicker than my 330 once you got some revs up.
Oh to answer the original question about mpg, the friend who has recently bought the one which I was talking about said he gets slightly over 30 on a long run with lots of motorway cruising, but a mix of urban and country driving gets him 25. He says he could get more if it wasn't for the fact it just begs to be driven hard. It's no surprise with the amazing sound it makes.

Any more opinions on this MPG, am interested myself as well!
Is a 15 mile commute, about 70% on motorways likely to get crap economy?
I'd expect to be around the 25mpg mark to be honest. I get that around town (6 speeder), and whilst I don't pootle about a great deal, I'm not on the rev limiter either. Is a 15 mile commute, about 70% on motorways likely to get crap economy?

as you can see I already slightly doubt the car choice I made! Lol
