Thinking about doing a few upgrades to my ST but am not sure what the best option would be. Currently looking at the Mountune kits but not sure how they compare to other companies like Pumaspeed?
Do the kits make a very noticeable difference to the speed of the car?

Any advice would be much appreciated

We have had a few enquires on Mountune 180 kit, however, with the amount of work involved and the prices involved I'd say it's too expensive for a 30BHP increase... Plenty of other, much cheaper, ways of screwing that power out of it. Although, smoothness will be compromised - hugely!

How would you suggest? Exhaust system? Air filter?

Check insurance first. Once you modify, the premiums get jacked up and it's often cheaper to change the car for something faster to start with.

Good thinking although I only just bought it so won't be changing it just yet, I'll see what they say about it anyway.

I was looking into this when I had mine and it seems that the cheapest gains come from a cold air intake and a new flexi pipe (the bit of the exhaust after the manifold) from a company like mongoose.

Thanks, did those parts add much noticeable gains in speed?

Yea its because the site is being upgraded through november so to reduce traffic its been locked out for the month to non donators
If you don't want to donate its worth keeping it in mind for December, some very knowledgable and friendly people on there

Im not sure what kinds of gains you would be looking at with replacing the flexi pipe and having a cold air intake. I havent done it personally but it seems as if everybody recommends this on fordfiestast.co.uk.
As said above fordfiestast.co.uk is a brilliant site and would highly recommend it.
Theres some nice supercharged and turbo build threads on there too. I think theres a person from there has his car in the readers car section on this site.

TBH the only way you'll feel it quicker is if you turbo or supercharge it. On my ST I had the full exhaust system air filter full remap etc etc and it never really feeled that much faster, it was noticable yes, but not what I'd call "feeling faster". Best thing if I was to do it again would be: air filter, lowering springs and flexi pipe. Go for an exhaust system if you want to change the exhaust note and if you go for a decat like me you can make it pop and bang a treat!! like this.....

Although it only stayed on for about 3 months!!!

Around 180 bhp. Dont be put off moddding it, its such a good little car that anything you do just improves it. Lowering it made such a difference to the handling (and looks) which i think is the best thing about the ST. If you want better power, do what Im doing a few sensible mods for the ST, and save your money for a turbo car!

K&N air filter should gain you around 10bhp
Then a flexi will make the whole thing flow better (won't really add any BHP)
Lowering seems to be the next stage to add to the handling
A manifold or cat back exhaust or both is called upon next (don't bother doing flexi if your going to do the manifold)

Maybe I'll just start by lowering it then. Is there anywhere in particular that I should go to get it done and how much should I expect to pay?

Get some eibach lowering springs if you want the cheapest way of doing it
Just over £100 for the springs then about £100 to fit
Or have a go yourself if your mechanically minded enough
Or you can get a set of coilovers but they are about £400ish

Thanks never really done anything to my a car before but I guess it would be wise to start. What would the main benefits be with the coilovers?

You could go lower with coilovers, they are a complete spring/shock combo and allow you to adjust the height. One day you could be lowered 50mm, the next you could raise it back to 20mm, etc..

The AP coilover kit seems to be the best value, decent price and I loved the kit on mine.

Gaz also do coilovers, you pay a bit extra and you also get damping adjustment meaning you can make them as soft or as hard as you'd like, ideal for track days.

If you don't fancy spending £400 on coilovers than as above, Eibach springs will be fine.

Power wise, simply getting a K&N filter along with a flex pipe will make the car breath better. The mountune kits are nice and pretty much always hit their quoted figures. The 165 kit gives more lower down torque, the 185 kit is better for higher up the rev range.

Then there's the supercharge kits from JamSport. All depends how much you want to spend really smile
