Due to a complete 180 degree turn I am now in the market for a new ST2 with Sat Nav. How are people getting on haggling with dealers at the moment? Anyone bought an ST?

Right now, discounts on these will be excellent with the new Focus on it's way very soon. Although, stretch that bit further and spec an ST3 - much easier to sell and not a massive difference in price either.

iwould not want to pay much for a new one now that the new one is on its way. too much to lose in depreciation otherwise. great cars though and get an st3.

Im not sure on the easier to sell argument as the ST3 only has 2 rear seat, Personally I think its more a case of it you want leather or not.

Have you thought about getting one privately rather than taking the hit on depreciation

They do tend to sell easier... and to be fair in most cases you don't buy an ST for the family.

Given the only real difference is leather I'm not too fussed either way. The price of a new ST2 3 door is £17999 from Ford so most people selling a nearly new one aren't going to be much lower than that anyway. I don't intend selling the car for a long time so depreciation is not a big worry, but high purchase price is. That is why it is such an appealing purchase. Cheap to buy, cheap to maintain and, when you look closely, very high spec.

Interestingly, the main concern raised by most people with this kind of purchase is residual value. There comes a point where purchase price is more important than residuals. For example, if I posted this question in any other forum I would be told by some twit to go and buy something German instead. A Golf GTI with the same spec as an ST3 with metalic paint and Nav is way over £30k. I don't care what the residuals are - that purchase price is just bloody stupid.

Either way, ST2 or ST3, it's not going to matter. You still get class leading chassis and a cracking engine.
Good all round cars...but TBH, I'd take the Golf any day...

If your thinking of spending £18k on an ST, how about stretching your budget a little more & have an RS?

They are now available from around £20K with low mileage & if you intend keeping for a while, you certainly wont lose as much as an ST!

Just my two pennys worth! biggrin

They stopped production in August. Most are sold now so discounts arn't great.

The Golf is thousands of Pounds more expensive. Over ten thousand actually. Hardly a relevant comparison.

Similarly, a used RS is indeed 'around £20k' but also the wrong side of £20k. Again, £18k or £22-23k is not insignificant and you have to draw a line somewhere. Also it doesn't come in five doors and the seats are a bd to get in and out of.
