Just a quick couple of questions.

I have no experiance with crossflow engines.... what is a mildly tuned xflow like in a mk1/mk11 escort? lets say circa 140bhp.

is it lively enough? or will it soon bore me?! I know its not going to set my hair on fire, but i want a nicely balanced car which will also be good fun on the track.

Another question about MK1's. What is a t49 shell? I have googled but come up with nothing good. Is the t49 the mexico shell?

Many thanks

Genuine 140 bhp crossflows in a mk1 are fun to drive but an lsd is essential for going sideways safely. Pinto engines have more poke but are heavier and feel a bit clunkier imo.

GM red top xe engines may be the way to go if you don't mind losing blue oval originality with a conversion. They have cosworth heritage and share DNA with the ultimate MK1 RS 1600 BDA.

Type 49 shells were used in RS models and export models. They were strengthened here and there.

Perfect. Just about answers all I was after.

Thanks alot... I guess the best bet is to test drive a few different engine types and compare.

Im thinking a crossflow should be alright for my needs. Im just after something fun for the track and the road. The car im currently interested in seems to have all the right stuff done to it, including an LSD fitted.

Many thanks for the quick reply

Just stumbled across this thread while having a "look around", curious how you get 140 horses from a mildly tuned X flow these days ?
in my day (when these were in production) wasn't a Mexico 110 tops ? Thought 140 -150 was pretty good for "full race" , twin 45's mental cam etc etc ?

I was going to say that 140bhp proper is a very highly tuned crossflow and would cost a lot to get that out of one. Everyone claims they have 130bhp ish out of a crossflow after tuning, but a lot of people would be disappointed if put on the rollers. If it does have 140 bhp, would be good on the track where revs are high, but possibly a bit 'cammy' for the road.

yup.. good point... ignore that 'mildly'!

Obviously fairly highly tuned. I have seen some running up to 170bhp though.

You can get an all steel one running at 200bhp at 10k revs ,but you would have to live in a tent rather than a house...........
