Folks,

I'm looking to change the car in the next few months, and was looking at either a Kia Ceed or Hyundai i30 - something around £10k.

Then I realised I was mad and am now looking at Mondeos at around £10k. I've seen a few 2.5T Titanium X cars at nearby franchised dealers for a little over the £10k mark.

So, question is, how juicy is the 2.5T? Am I likely to see the 33mpg I currently get from my decrepid 1.8 petrol Mk3?

I do about 8k a year, mostly short trips, but I would like a bit of go on the odd long trip I do. The 1.8 Durascrap isn't really giving me the performance I want.

Cheers,
HD.

rofl The ony way you'll see anything close to 33mpg is by driving at a constant 70mph on an m-way!

I have run a Focus ST for the last 3 yrs as my company car, the last 6mths of which were DreamScience'd after I bought it and gave it my wife. It averages 23mpg on mixed driving. I also have a Focus RS MP350 and it manages about the same, on the same runs. I would expect a Mondeo to be in the same ball-park.

If you are remotely enthusiastic in your driving, you'll be below 25mpg. If you do short trips, expect that to go down. I do 12miles to work on a mixture of dual carriageways, A/B roads and then town stop/starting in Brum for the last few miles. That's the basis of my 23mpg figures with both cars.

The 2.5T is a great engine and with a quick £300 remap, will gain a nice jump in performance that'll have you addicted. However, it'll cost at the pumps.

If you want the engine, but are concerned about the bills, get a slightly cheaper Mondeo, or a Focus ST (5-door if you want the better practicality) for about 8K and put the difference towards fuel. You'll not regret it thumbup

I have the 2.2tdci (180bhp) and I only just see 35mpg on mixed driving. I'm expecting that to go down once I have it tweaked next month (210+ bhp)

Cheers folks, I'm thinking maybe the Focus is a better idea, the missus has enough fun parking the Mk3 Mondeo - a Mk4 would be a disaster for her.

the 2.5 will easily return 30mpg on motorway driving. best to go for the 3l one tho, same engine as what was in the 220 but better spec. but the diesel 2.2 will easy crank over 50mpg

We're talking Mk4 2.5 5-pot turbo, not Mk3 V6s here.

Not to mention how the 205ps 3L is a "better spec" than the 226ps 220 version!
