Hi All,I am in the market for a late model Mondeo ST220 and would like to know the differance between an ordinary flywheel and the dual mass one used on the ST220 and should i have any concerns regarding this ? thanks Bill.

I'm no expert, but generally I think there's a few points:

  • AFAIK all petrol and diesel mk3's have the DMF
  • Apparently it smooths out the drivetrain
  • If they fail they can cost £££ to replace
  • Nobody is entirely sure what causes the failures, but they're much more common than the derv. Could be the extra torque or it could be a conseqence of labouring the engine
  • None of this really worried me when I was buying, definitely check the overall condition of the clutch but I wouldn't worry unduely about it.

DMF failure is much higher on the diesels due to significantly more torque..
