Pinto with twin DCOE Webers (poor running)
Discussion
I've got a 2l Pinto in my westfield and I'm trying to get it running properly for emissions purposes and the impending IVA test.
I went to Northampton Motorsport to get the correct jets for the twin 40 DCOE webers, have had the emissions checked/tweaked, and had a play with the distributor but am still getting occasional backfires through one of the carb barrels and the engine doesn't have that pull/punch I'm looking for. The emissions are now within tollerance.
Is there anyone out there that can confirm that I have the basics correct before I go and spend a small fortune on the rolling road.
Fully rebuilt engine to standard spec
Standard cam and camshaft pulley
Around 10-12degrees of advance (burton bosch electronic dizzy)
Chokes: 34mm (was 30mm supplied with new carbs)
mainjets: 135 (was 115 supplied with new carbs)
Air correctors: 160 (was 200 supplied new with carbs)
Idle jets: 50 F9 (were 45 F9s)
My only thought thus far is the air correctors seem to be smaller than the general thinking on the websites that reccomend 190s.
If someonehas any experience I'd appreciate your thoughts.
Cheers,
Martin
p.s. I've checked for air and exhaust leaks, but have found none to date.

The air correctors wont come into play until top revs are reached, you need to be looking more at the idle jets for emissions plus you don't say what emulsion tubes you have, you also now have quite large chokes and don't say what auxiliaries you have. The back fire is more than likely a poor balance issue or an air leak somewhere, even a hole in the exhaust can cause it. Webers seem to be quite a black art and in the long run it can be cheaper and better to fit throttle bodies and an after market ecu.

I had very similar problems with a standard spec 2 litre pinto and twin 40's in a mates Robin Hood.
Eventually we decided it was 'over carbed' for a standard unmodified engine. We took the twin 40's off and fitted a correctly jetted 38 DGAS and manifold and the car was fine after that. The 40's looked the part but in practice didn't work.

I took my car to Northampton Motorsport where they did a rolling road setup and hey bingo, a tweak to the ignition, balancing of the carbs and a larger idle jet and it runs great! Clearly it would be better with a fast road cam and a full rolling road session, but the engine is still running in after the rebuild.
Knowledge and the right tools is everything. Had heard very good thing about these guys and they didn't dissapoint. I'd strongly reccomend themif you're having carb troubles. Very friendly and knowledgeable chaps.
