Have had my new Fiesta Zetec S TDCi for a little over a month now and am very pleased with it.

However, one thing that is irritating me a little is that I am finding it difficult to get a smooth change from 1st to 2nd. The gears engage smoothly enough but then when I accelerate there is a split second when it doesn't pick up very well thus leading to jerky progress. I'll probably ask Ford to have a look at it but just wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar.

Thanks.

Sounds about right - the Focus 1.6TDCI does the same. Makes it feel like there's a rubber band somewhere in the drivetrain.

My wife has the petrol Zetec S and it's a great car. The only problem is it is low geared so at motorway speeds it revs quite high meaning poor fuel economy. We are currently considering swapping it for the diesel version. What is the diesel like at motorway speeds? Do you get anywhere near the mpg figures quoted?

How fast does your wife drive on the motorway? I get over 40mpg out of my new zetec s petrol (just under 400 miles to a tank) Would be very surprised if changing to the diesel makes sense once you factor in all the costs involved. Tell her to slow down if she wants to save money.

95% of my use is motorway (M25) and I'm averaging 53mpg (according to the trip computer).

I'm not a thrasher or a dawdler - probably average 65 - 70mph. Plus my journey includes Dartford where dawdling is inevitable!
