Ford Mondeo heat shield?

I noticed recently that the heat shield on my 2002 1.8 LX was hanging off a bit, then it fell off while driving up a bumpy track!

Do they do anything important, and will the car fail the MOT for not having one? I retrieved the part, and it doesn't look damaged.

Thanks for any help, on what is probably a very stupid question!

Mine is missing on my mondeo only noticed when i was fitting a towbar.
