56 plate ST TDCi

Needed a couple of tryres yesterday so I went to the local tyre place & asked about a slight rubbing noise I've been hearing the last couple of days. He put the car on a ramp and it looks like both sides are rubbing on the almost vertical bar that runs through the suspnsion which holds the wheels (yeh I know fk all about the inside of cars and the part names lol). This guy (ex mechanic, he says), says he can't see anything wrong with it & he did have a good luck underneath checking over this n that. There's no wheel wobble, the suspension looked ok, all the frame looked in place etc.

I've got no trusty mechanics to go to which means I'll probably have to pay Ford £90 odd for them just to have a quick look. I know it's a long shot to post on here without more info or pics but does anyone know what it is or know what its most likely to be?

Thanks

What size tyres are fitted to the car? Could be they're the wrong size hence the rubbing.

Has it had a prang in the past - dodgy accident damage?

Frankly if you don't know about the underside of your car and you've already had a bloke who know's his spanners take a look at it, I'd take it into a garage (doesn't have to be Ford) and get them to have another look at it.

However....

Hard to tell from your description, but I assume the 'long bar' you refer to is the anti roll bar. If the tyres are rubbing on this it's probably suffering from worn bushes - get the car in the air again and try (using a crowbar) to pry at the bar - if there's any movement you've found your problem.

Thanks. The size is 235/40/18 which is correct. No prangs apart from hitting plenty of pot holes a few months ago, 1 resulted in having to replace a burst front tyre.

Your probably (& hopefully) right about the bushes although surely that bloke would have checked them because its a common fault. My friend was telling me a little about the bushes the other night. I'll be getting it checked out on Monday hopefully but I haven't got that facility to check myself.

Thanks smile

Oh st! After a quick googling it looks like your right. Hmmm possibly all 4 tyres are the wrong size. Well that would explain a thing or 2.

the mk4 runs 235/40/18 which could have confused a fitter when they was last replaced hence wrong size
