S-Max 2.5T big problems...
Discussion
S-Max has started to make a nasty noise, a bit like a slipping belt, when warm.
Garage reports that it's almost out of oil. Scary - oil light didn't come on (apparently it has failed).
I don't check it very frequently as it's never burnt oil in the past. More fool me.
Just waiting for the garage to find time to get the sump off and find out how bad the damage is...
Any thoughts?

Does the noise go when you pull the dipstick out? I know the Focus ST have a problem with the Oil Filter Housing makes a screeching/whistling noise and goes when you pull the stick out.
Les
Its an engine breathing issue that causes that & is quite common would be the first thing i would check.Les
For some reason it seems common on a lot of late cars not only Fords

OP: any news on this?
Hope it's not too bad for you....
Thanks for the thought.Hope it's not too bad for you....
Slow progress from the garage - a busy, trustworthy local independent...
Still not exactly clear on root cause or extent of damage.
Garage has dropped the sump - low oil and lots of heat-related clag in the oil.
But no visible damage - no bits of swarf, no big end or mains discolouration or the funny smell that dying bearings supposedly make.
They haven't inspected the bearings - as somewhat bizarrely Ford/Volvo say that if you split the rods or mains you have to fit new rods or main bearing lower ladder (it's like a bedplate but isn't).
The rods are fracture split (not uncommon) but I wasn't aware that this meant they can't be rebuilt.
They're getting the oil breather off to check it, but in the process have found the source of the oil leak - there's a load in the cambelt cover - it's obviously leaking there somewhere.
So we don't know what the noise was - the breather being clogged by lots of soot from over-heated oil, the oil filling up the cambelt area, the cambelt, bearings or something else.

No lasting damage? If not get this weeks lottery ticket!! Lucky........
touch wood..She did about 700 miles last week - most of which was a long run to Cornwall and back.
Hopefully if there was anything bad it would have shown up.
No funny noises and pulls like a train.
One bizarre thing though....
Mechanic thought that the oil pressure switch had failed - because he never saw an oil pressure light on the dash.
He ordered one from Ford but couldn't find anywhere to fit it - and Ford technical couldn't explain where to put it either.
When I read the manual it say that the 2.5T doesn't have an oil pressure light!!! (note all the other S-Max variants do).
Which is strange....
But it does have a sensor attached to the bottom of the sump which I'm guessing is either oil level (in which case it either doesn't work or is isn't used in the Ford installation of this engine) or oil quality (viscosity I guess) - again, this would make sense if on variable servicing, which isn't an option for the S-Max. Either way, it didn't flag up a situation where oil was low and of very poor quality.

Glad this panned out okay for you in the end. I have got two of these engines (Kuga 2.5T and Focus RS) and shall now be religiously checking the oil level weekly...
At first I beat myself up about not checking the oil.Not sure it would really have made much difference - until the seal went on the VCT I doubt she would have consumed much; when it blew I think the loss would have been very quick.

At least the RS has the oil pressure gauge, on its central cluster, so unusual indications on that may show an issue.Gassing Station | Ford | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
