Is it becoming unacceptable to 'go for a drive'?
Discussion
Like everyone here, I'm a petrolhead through and through. Always have been, always will. But, in these changing times of global warming, carbon taxes, congested roads, car-sharing, travel plans, eco-worries, and safety at all costs etc, is it actually becoming unacceptable to admit to using any vehicle just for selfish pleasure?
Guess we've got some while before necessary journeys are outlawed, but I'm not so sure just getting out to enjoy the twisties for the sake of it has much of a shelf-life left as a 'legitimate' activity... sad times

I begin to get the feeling it's socially unacceptable to do almost anything enjoyable
I just live life knowing that my lifestyle is not socially acceptable and I'm proud too

I know exactly what you're getting at. BUT, if we all stop going for pointless drives then we're letting the loonies win. we need to go for MORE pointless drives.
if anyone asks why- just tell them it's human nature. it's what we do. we do pointless things because we want to, because they make us feel good, make us feel like we've achieved something.
why buy expensive food when cheap food will do? why buy smoked salmon when fish fingers could do? why drink champagne when lemonade will do? because we seek the best for ourselves- the things that make us feel good.
unless you're starting a family, what's the point in sex? it's the same as a pointless drive. objectively it achieves nothing but subjectively, it's a different story.
KEEP ON DRIVING FAST. KEEP ON HAVING POINTLESS DRIVES!!
(global warming is a natural phenomenon. there is NO scientific evidence to show that man has had any effect on the environment. this is basically a natural change in the atmosphere. the temperature of the earth can vary by a few degrees and at the moment it has only altered by points of degree. this could even be down to more accurate measuring equipment. but try telling the lentil-lovers this)

Dont let the bastards grind you down...
We shall go on to the end, we shall fight on A-roads, we shall fight on the motorways and racetracks, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the car, we shall defend our interest, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the b-roads, we shall fight on the parking grounds, we shall fight in the driveways and in the streets, we shall fight on the hill roads; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this interest or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our interest beyond the lentilist, armed and guarded by the ABD, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."

Well put plotloss well put!!!
Rousing stuff, Plotschweinkreigel.
One irritating thing is when you select a carefully obscure route, one where only you, the motor and filligree kipper roameth free and yet one still descends upon some nodding McDaisy in a Matiz Saltza DeLuxe like a sparrow hawk on final descent 'gainst hapless field mouse, to find said dribbling droner peetling forth, not with deliberate deceleration rather, steam-from-ear-fuming unawareness.
Sitting there, on a road with no map markings, it would be so crystallisingly simple for Farmer Deadzone to simply indicate left and wave 'ee forth.
Instead, the procession of those experiencing life in death continues grimly apace, occassionally clipping pant-moistening apii at ground shimmering velocities, like 7 mph.
It seems that abstinence from broad minded road politeness and deliverately preventative shennanigans by the "50 in a 70 & 50 through a 30" brigade are familiar bedfellows in the matter of gimp friendly hoonstriction.
Not for the first time, rotting vats of self-phornication do seem hugely apt.

Using Babelfish I just translated this from English, to Spanish, to Italian, to German, and back to English.... and it came out the same!
BTW... I loved the bits I understood.![]()

there is only one thing worse than a 50 in a 70 and 50 in a 30 driver.
that is a 50 in a 70 driver who comes accross a speed camera and then BRAKES when they see it!!!f
ing idiots! then they wave their fist at you when you pass them!
lets not even start on people who brake when another car goes past the other way!

Ah, so now this site has turned into an English Literature class? Absolute 100%
to Plotloss and derestrictor. A man with a car beneath his seat and his foot to the floor is a man in his element, but one with both this and the ability to translate that feeling to prose is a god amongst petrolheads (why do you think Clarkson gets paid so much?).

All of the West Coast of Scotland looks like that.
Except the weather's only like that about 1 week every 5 years.
We toured the West Coast a few years ago in my Cossie. Marvellous experience.
Thats why I wanted to know. I'm in sunny Glasgow and I'm a stones throw from a fun road to loch Lomond. I know the mountains in the photo are familiar, just wondered where exactly it was taken. Further up the coast I suspect...

The other one that I hate is the driver who does 45, whether he's on a wide open NSL road or passing along a narrow urban road with kids playing.
I was "proceeding" towards Catterick Garrison recently on the tank road from Leyburn and passed a Toyota Picnic about a mile or so before I came into the village. I then slowed as I entered the built up area and Mr Dawdling Picnic overtook me. He'd been doing a steady 48 over the top and he didn't see any reason to change his speed now just because he was in a residential street.
Appropriate speed means nothing to these morons.
Julie and I 'went for a drive' at the weekend. Cuising merrilye about Englande's greene and pheasant lande did we consume copious litres of BPs finest (£88 in fact), a begrudged and overbearing percentage of which went to the Unwanted Ones to misuse as they see fit.
Should they deny us this road-rambling right, they shoot themselves in the proverbial and lose the revenues of fuel duty and all those other taxes on products that we purchase directly or indirectly to amuse ourselves about the highways.
May the miserable bastards die a hellish death and rot for all eternity as detritus in the treads of Satan's TVR tyres.

Don has said where it is, but I'm afraid I've forgotten. If forced, I'd have said that's looking South-East across Loch Fyne from somewhere above the A83 south of Inverary.
