Hi Guys

I am thinking of using the AJP8 engine in my car and wonder if anyone has turbocharged this engine yet or if someone has made a twin turbo kit that can be bought off the shelf, I have looked through the internet but cant find much info about the engine.

Can the engine make more power and still be reliable or are there any problems with turbo charging this engine?

What does it weigh (dry weight)

Cheers,

Mark.

There was always an advert in the Sprint magazine about supercharging and turbo charging with a pic of TVR's on it. Never heard of anyone doing it though.

Marky P,
What a stupid idea.

I like it. I like it alot!!

I don't know about the AJP V8, but I do know that the Speed Six has been tested at TVR with a supercharger and its giving out (and I don't know if I should say), but 6XX bhp. They have done alot to restrict the output hoping for around 550bhp, but it was still putting out 620bhp! Mental, absoluteluy mental.

There is nothing off the shelf for these engines as yet TVR will be offering a supercharged version of the V8 in the very near future. As for Twin Turbos I dont see why not as long as the compression, timing and the likes are sorted out.

Cerber450, is that TVR or TVRpower??? I assume this means the V8 will live on a little longer??

Thanks guys

120 KG's that is light.
Where can I get an engine from? I will need loom also so I have all the connectors etc and I'll run the engine off my pectel T6 management system.

TVR power advised me that they are going to offer the supercharger kit soon.

Cheers,

there are some tvr scrappers and ads here sometimes.
But engines are very expensive even for a dog !

It's actually 680hp!

Thoroughly looked into this one, lets just say, it'll be way way cheaper getting a Corvette V8 engine already with dropped compression and getting a pair of T25/32 Garrets for the job, it will eat the AJPV8 for breakfast and crap it out in the evening... I love the AJP engine for what it is, but its upgrade path is limited due to many structural design technicalities.... and you would need to get a lot of the internals removed, uprated, plated, re-bored, etc etc.... in the end you'll probably have spent sooo much time and money for custom re-fabrication of internals that you could have purchased a Ferrari F40 V8 Twin Turbo engine instead!

Not exactly the case mate.

I've been looking at this for sometime and yes the internals would need sorting. lower compression pistons and possibly stronger top & bottom bolts used. The linings & pistons can be chemically treated to reduce heat build up with Keronite (or something)@£25 per piston. Then a steel head gasket used. All this is not expensive around £2000 (not including labour) then some imported ball bearing turbos at £2800 for the pair including external actuators & electronic boost controller. Then some custom made exhausts, intakes (easy) & an intercooler (I've already designed a large front mounted one and was quoted £430 from forge motorsport for manufacturing it).

Mapping wont be too effected as it can be remapped to suit.

There are obviously other sundries like spark plugs and the like to be changed too....etc, etc

It probably could be done cheaper using normal ceramic turbos with integral actuators and a manual boost controller but if you really want to mod it, do it right and go for the best and create a monster.

Fro example look at whats available for your 3000gt all the internals & crank can be replaced for around £2500 which includes forged low compression pistons, rods and titanium valve spring retainers and stronger springs to allow crazy boost and higher revs.

So I cant see why that wont work on our cars as an engine is just that at the end of the day an engine!

I don't mean to offend anyone but I've looked into this quite a bit and theres no mechanical or otherwise reason that I or anyone I've spoken to regarding it can come up with. TVR are going to offer a supercharger option to the V8 cerbera owners soon so it cant be that expensive.

Come on Craig, I didnt say its impossible, I just merely was highlighting that its impractical with this engine, and it has not been done before and getting information required from TVR is a nightmare to be able to let such a process to go through smoothly.

And you cant deny, a chevy V8 with Garretts will eat the AJP.... and the good thing is, there is already soooo many aftermarket add-ons and technical data which support and prove the various upgrade routes for the american V8's....

Spend a wack in getting it right to be the first one to have a AJPV8 aspirated....

or

spend a reasonable amount and get something that will wipe the floor with 1000bhp plus....

take your pick...
sensibility and practicality...

AJP = no aftermarket support, everything has to be researched and learnt the hard way, through your own mistakes and financial loss...

Chevvy V8 = a shit load of upgrades and routes! and economically more viable.

You're right about the GT, I know a few in the GTO club who have 600+bhp beasts, but to be honest with you, my GT still frightens me when she gets a decent amount of dense cold air, woooooooosh... fast enough for a daily ride!

Spot on with the engine being just an engine, but thats not the issue, its the fact that someone else hasnt spent the time and money to get all the plans laid out... so it will be a BIG and costly project for the average joe bloggs.

But to hear a dump valve on a Cerbera with a huge induction and turbo noise would be heavenly!

I'd love it too! I had a HKS racing one one my GTO and it sounded awsome would have to have 2 on the cerb just for the effect tho'

I did think you did mean it couldn't be done but I think that the cost of a conversion to the AJP compaired to buying a new chevy engine & mating to the gearbox and doing the conversion would amount to more than just using the AJP you would already have!

Chatting to one guy about these engines today and he tells me that the exhaust gas presure is on the low side which will cause problems with lag etc, this is one of the reasons why the superchargers are being fitted.

I will look into it further

I hear ya but that is the norm these days and the weight of the chevy is way to high, AJP8 offers so much more from its compact size and low weight and the thing even comes with a dry sump system, it may be expensive but it does produce 100 HP per Litre how much will a chevy cost to get the same results.

Cheers,

Does it? Can't remember for sure, I thought it was only a dry sump in the Tuscan racers. I've been wrong before though

LOL, not quite mate, not quite

It's definitely an interesting engine with great performance for it's physical size. Maybe if someone could build a set of correctl length manifolds for it as well the whole point of the flat plane crank would work!

Cheers,
Rob
