Looking for some for my V8 4.6 twin turbo. I currently have standard 4.0 heads and they are struggling to produce more than 370hp great torque at 490lbft. They only have double valve springs, no porting or big valves.

Been offered some Buick 300 heads. These have much bigger valves as standard and big combustion chambers so should drop the compresion a touch as well.

Anyone have any experience of using them, a quick google looks quite positive.

I would want to port these as well and play with them where you can.

Thanks

Neal

Hi Neal
I was looking at a set of these for my conversion last year but was advised against it, i cant remember why now i shall try and find the email to see what was said................

Found the email and basically i was told that they would probably need a refurb as they are old heads this can be very expensive, and the compression ratio had already be factored into the piston bowls, i think you told me you have 8:1 compression this would put you into the same situation as me. but if they are cheap enough it may be worth a punt!

Hi Richard nice to meet you the other day thumbup

He wants £400 for them which I didnt think was too bad, I would want to have them worked anyway. I am around 8.0 compression but that is with de-comp plates I could junk those and I would probably be ok.

They are on a good stripped engine and ready for inspection.

Decisions decisions ....

They have really nice inlet ports imo but the combustion chambers are 54cc so will drop your compression ratio quite a lot, maybe a couple of clicks iirc. The casting quality is also piss poor and the exhaust valves are small iirc. I've used 300 heads before but they're almost 50 years old now so will need an extensive refurb if it's not already been done. I put them onto a 5.4 turbo engine to get compression down to about 9:1 which was as low as I could get.

Hi Mike,

So are they a good starting point for £400 if they are good. Seller tells me they are stripped and ready for inspection. I can probably get rid of my de-comp plates as well. He has measured the valves and come back with 41.2 inlet and 33.5 exhaust when I convert them I get 1.622 inlet and 1.318 exhaust.

I would want to get new valves installed is it worth the £400 as a starting point or is my money better of spent towards my existing 4.0 heads being ported / bigger valves.

Thanks
Neal
