Right, been on the lookout for a Griffith for the last couple of months (trawling PH classifieds, autotrader etc), but not really finding what I want. So, I'm looking at enlisting help from the experts.

Now, can anyone who's used either tell me the differences in their services? I don't mean quality, as I understand from reading that they're both highly regarded. I mean in terms of exactly what services they provide?

From what I've read, Rob Ingleby seeks out TVR's in private ad's etc, checks them over, haggles with the seller, and you pay him a fee and then pay the seller direct for the car, in a private sale as agreed. James on the other hand sources the cars, inspects, services, sells them with warranty etc, slightly more main-dealer like, but without the overheads of premises etc. I've also (mis?)read that James seems to be the Cerbie favourite, but is that true of all the models?

Obviously I'll be speaking to them in the next day or so, but just though I'd get any feedback from their customer base beforehand.

I should point out that I'm a first time TVR buyer, so I'd be more comfortable with someone sourcing for me rather than going in blind, and I'm guessing they wouldn't really appreciate being played-off against each other.

Cheers, Sy

Being pedantic, James doesn't service them (I don't think). At least on Cerbies I believe he uses a well respected Cerbie specialist

I have used both and a lot of what you say is correct.

I think Rob and James work in different areas of the market really
so it depends on what you want.

A couple of things that really impressed me with James were:

1) He commits his money to buy a car in, so he must have faith in what he is
then selling on and the car has a full ramp inspection.
Most are sold with a service recently completed and with a one year warranty.

2) After service has been stunning from James.

He looks after your interests after you have bought the car using contacts
should you want work / upgrades carried out.

Both are very nice guys and know their trade so the bottom line is....
you pays your money and you takes your pick....

I do know both will be off to Le Mans, so better be quick...

Simon - I used Rob to source my Griff and he did indeed find me a particularly good deal. Cat D registered but fully repaired, he even persuaded the seller to pay for a full Autolign inspection, which the car passed with flying colours.

With Rob, you pay a small percentage of his fee, about £100 or so, up front as a show of good faith that you are serious before he commits his time to you. Rob will also give you a full report on the car and his independent valuation.

James is also a top guy. From what I can gather, his service is more in depth than Robs as he is actually selling the cars with warranty, though I am sure he will source and inspect if that's the route you prefer.

True, anyone can do their homework and find the cars... but have you got the time to do it? I certainly didn't have.

I can recommend them both and always do to anyone that emails me asking for info on buying a Griff (which seems to be a regular occurance now!).

I also found the services of Adrian Blyth and Fernhurst good. They are both in the south, as am I.

I've used them both. I'd echo GCerbera's post pretty much to the word.

Sorry dont know Rob Ingleby but bought a Chim from James last year, fantastic car, no problems, did what it said on the tin.

Good guy, suggest you see what he has and if he comes up with anything in your timescale then go with it, as a previous post says he's bought the car with his own money so is unlikely to buy too many dogs.

Good luck

If you haven't bought a car by the end of June, then get along to pistonfest, as Aggers will be there with his Pimms tent and some motors

I would also like to echo what Dusty said about Fernhurst. They are also excellent and have a big service dept which does sometimes have its obvious advantages being both Service and a Sales led TVR Indy.
I have dealt with them for three TVR's having bought my current one from them and they have been faultless.

Give Drew or Simon a call if you are looking...

and hopefully plenty of cold beers and munchies for us lot to pinch once again despite the fact we are ex-customers

I used Rob to buy my first TVR and James my second. Both top guys offering top services. Rob offers more of a broker service and will source you a good car as per your spec. James offers top cars at a good price and avoids any cars that aren't 100% sorted.

With james you often get teh chance to inspect the car yourself if you can get yourself down to my workshop .. so you can see underneath as well as the polished bits

not sure about rob, but many times you don't see the car you're buying until you collect it maybe? .. someone corect me if that's wrong though ..

Agger also does the warranty bit and you get more *come-back* on niggles and stuff should you have any, with rob ingleby it's still very much a private sale so you should factor that into your pricing. Not such a problem on chims / griffs (although you can still get a poor one as one unlucky guy found recently), but on cerbies / tuscans / T350s I would steer clear of the private sale route unless you're very confident.

both are well respected in what they do, probably best thing is to phone them both and see which one gives you greatest confidence?

I never got a report from Rob

If i was starting again Mr agger would get my vote as its "semi dealer" a bit dearer than private but not dealer costs

Basically you pay your money you takes your choice

Surely there must be more than these 2 who you can contact to find a car. What about some of the independents like David Gerald or Steve Reid. Both have plenty of experience and good reputations, or do you want to try to save money by taking a chance and buying private but dont have the knowledge. Could prove costly in the long run

I rang Rob a couple of times last week and got no reply, so he may be unavailable just now.

Apart from that, I've never used either but get the same good vibes from the PH posse as you.

gingerprince, I've been in touch with both James and Rob this week with a view to buying my first TVR, too (after a chim500).

Both were very helpful and knowledgeable, and both are away to le Mans for all of next week.

James uses Joospeed for at least some of his servicing requirements (cos it was Joospeed who gave me James' number).

I will be hunting seriously as of the week after Le Mans....

I've met Rob - very nice guy, at last year's Back Home. He does all the leg work for you in terms of travelling, which makes his fee worthwhile. He can obviously cover potential cars for several customers in one round trip, so gets to see quite a few examples and how the 'market' is.
Got to be worth a 'phone call.

Sy,

I don't know what your budget is but I know of a car that has recently come on to the market that has an impeccable history. (Not my car I hasten to add - but one I know very well)

It's for sale at a dealers and if you mail me through my profile I'll tell you what I know about it and see if it's of any interest

All the best
