i still think it's turbo'd but will research further!
the cosworth HB engine (McLaren/Benetton 1993) had about 650-680 brake and was 3.5 V8.
F1 technology from 10 years ago only just filtering down to top-level sportscars. does that mean in 25 years time we'll have 3 litre V10s with 880bhp like Schuey's in our road cars?

Exactly my point. Assuming you could stick 2 of those together and you have (roughly) 3000BHP from a 3 litre V8. Makes the R8 output look a little low.
I think engines with those outputs were reserved for qualifying, after whch the engines were junked. The race cars had a lower figure for endurance.

the BMW F1 engines of the 80s used road car blocks!! that's true. BMW's engine guy (Paul Rosche) still stands by that even today.
i think it was the block used in the 2002 but that's maybe not right.
the boost on them was colossal though.
also 610bhp from 3.5 V8 IS impressive if it was naturally aspirated.

BMW F1 engines back in the 80s used to put out 1000 BHP+++ for qualifying and they were much smaller capacities believe me.
610 BHP from 3.5 litres is not *that* outstanding
quite....F1 engines nowadays are 900bhp+ from a mere 3 litre NA

my list: minister K-series-250bhp from 1.8
138 bhp per/litre
Hayabusa 1.5- 230bhp, 153 bhp per litre
swindon vauxhall- 305bhp 2litre 152.5 bhp per litre
(i'll think on more and edit soon)
edit: 2.8, 4cyl Hart engine- 450bhp 160.7 bhp per litre

It's worth dwelling on that BMW F1 engine for a moment.
People today are impressed with 100 BHP/litre. That's the sort of figure the Speed 6 can easily achieve NA. The AJP V8 is struggling to reach that even in RR build.
If you go back to the 60s/70s and take the Ferrari 4.4 V12 (as in the Daytona), that was quoted at 352 BHP. I think they arrived at that figure by saying "It's 4.4 litres, let's say 80 BHP/litre, gives us, um 352 BHP"
The BMW lump is an order of magnitude higher at 1000 BHP/litre! (albeit with stupid boost levels).
And I don't even like bl00dy BMWs
