I been toying with the idea of selling up here, cashing everything in and moving to Devon.

£200000 will get me 3+ acres and a big enough house and out buildings.

Anyone else done this?

A friends parents moved from near Iver to Bideford in North Devon. Their 4 bed house in Iver got them a 5 bed place plus 3 bed guest house, outbuilding and land.

Nice for a while, but the lack of civilisation would probably do my head in after a while, added to which, its where the in-(out)laws live!!

Swerve!

Matt, the world DOES NOT revolve around the south east – the rest of the country knows it – it just takes a bit for you southerners to catch on

And there's me ... a Man of Kent.

L10. 'Go for it, 150% 24-7' (all of which they say on Trisha)

What have you got to lose? There are some old threads on here about this subject – but why Devon may I ask? There are other picturesque parts of the country too other than 'darn sarf' – ever been Chesterfield/Sheffield way – lovely city

Oh yeah, and £200,000 will get you most of Attercliffe

Mike, I do realise that the country doesnt revolve around the South East. For one I bloody hate London, its like market day every day and to be honest I dont think its finished yet.

But Devon, picturesque though it is, and lovely people, it would just do my head in if I spent an appreciable amount of time there. In some parts they still point at aircraft and refer to the TV as 'Merlins Box'

If your looking for something around North Devon, I know of a house in Braunton, Near Barnstaple. which is just along from Bideford, (Or Bidie-ford, as my dad has nicknamed it) going for around £200K! 4 Bedroom, 3 bathroom, underground parking, lounge massive garden, double gates, It's huge! Takes 5 minutes to get from the 3rd bedroom to the basement! One of the bedrooms is on the ground floor, built as an extension for an elderly bloke who couldn't walk upstairs, it's got an en-suite bathroom!

Know that area well, I tend to surf in Croyde.

I'd be after 3+ acres though.

Was down with the out-laes last weekend in Somerset (Chard) and yes it all looks appealing £250k decent sized house with a few acres, and out buildings ( I always wanted outbuildings!) but come on it is all a bit like bandit country down there!

L10,

I live in devon and work all over the country, I live in Plymouth, we have a local airport that does daily services to gatwick, when I do work in London, I can leave my house at 0700 on a Monday and be in the office in the centre of London by 0900.

The loal roads are fantastic in devon and great scenery, to go to france from Plymouth is a doddle as we have our own ferry port as well.

Your money will go far too, a house for 200k where I live would be a 5 bedroom with land.

Happy Hunting

Live in the Thames Valley but work for a french company based in Paris and cover most of Europe so where I am is not too important so long as I can get to a decent airport, the link to Gatwick sounds good, also Bristol is growing the number of routes it covers I think? R...

Best property websites I have seen when looking for a house are:

www.wheretolive.co.uk
www.fish4homes.co.uk
www.findaproperty.com

None of them are brilliant, but the best out there.

www.stags.co.uk/

Check out the one in Honition that gets auctioned tomorrow. Area A, £150K I think, ugly house but with 3 acres there's lots of potential.

What amount of land would you need to be able to put down a 1.5Km circuit in Asphalt?

Well ... for a start, a 1.5km circle would have an area of 0.75^2x3.14 = 1,770,000 m2, 1 acre = 4084m2 so it'd be 433 acres.

But you could shrink that a lot by making it interesting with actual corners and things, say one-quarter of that? Something like 100 acres? A middling farm then. Could get that for your £200k in the right place. Go for it! More interesting than turning it into another bl**dy golf course.

Have to pay for the construction costs though. 1.5km at, say, £500k per lane per km to A road standard, 2 of those lanes should be a decent width, so that's ... err ... £1.5M. A bagatelle.

Can't believe I actually bothered to work all that out.
