Hi all,

At some point in the future I would like to buy a TVR and import it into Canada (when the regs allow). I just can't decide which model would be best, I really don't mind.

My choice would be between a Griff, Cerb, Chim, or of the S6 models a Tuscan or a Tamora.

I can see the appeal of the V8's, easy to service over here, great sound etc. But something about the more modern cars also appeals. Although if I was to get an S6 I would have to make sure all engine work had been done as I don't know how much could be worked on over here.

So if I am importing into a country that won't be familiar with the models (either the bodywork, electrics, or engines), what would you recommend?

I know the import stuff so no need to comment on that. I just want some info on how easy each of the models would be able to be serviced/mended etc. Also would I need a chassis restoration done?

As in up to Speed Six models? Nearly everything I have seen over here is pre-Griff.

The cerb is a V8 but not a rover V8 so it comes with the same issues re servicing etc that comes with a S6 (but at the end of the day they are just engines and not complex ones at that).

It's the Speed Six that most concerns me. Much as I would love a Griff or Chimera, the Tamora really appeals. Just wondering if a good independent sports car shop would be able to service it, or would I need to ship in parts from the UK?

With the older V8's I'm assuming parts are relatively easy to come by in North America.

Also do all Griff/Chim's need a chassis restoration if they are to last?

Hi Robert
Not withstanding the support issues, I would seriously recommend as late a Tamora as your budget would allow. I went from a chimeara 400 to a 2005 Tamora - what a car, everything about it is better in my opinion, handling, ride comfort, brakes, steering, you name it. Only the sound track is perhaps not as good, but an S6 has it's own sound track, especially at 7000 rpm! I think the Tamora is one of TVR's best kept secrets.

Buy a good one (2003 onwards would be my suggestion), get any mods you fancy having done, a good service, Str8six is where I go, you'll have a perfect TVR by the time you get it to Canada. Then for the future, the internet can source your spare parts, try and get hold of a copy of Graham Varleys Sagaris workshop manual (it covers all the important parts that are shared between the two cars) and you should be safe and sound with a good local mechanic.

There is a Chim for sale in the Toronto area and a great wedge for sale in Saskatoon.

Good luck finding the car of your dreams.

TVR NA imported some Griffiths when they were new. Youmay want to call and introduce yourself to like minded, good people, just for its own sake. They're a great source of support for all of the models as TVRs are somewhat evolutionary, and many of the procedures/techniques are consistent through the years.

Best,
B.

Hi Bob,

You might wish to check out the British car show this weekend, Bronte park Sat. Sept. 17th thru Sunday. There have always been a couple of 90's Griffiths on display as well as last year one Ontario registered Chim.
Also, TVR North America has an open house on Saturday starting at 11am, before the Bronte show starts.

Good luck,

Arthur

The annual national event of the TVR Car Club North America takes place on Friday Sept 30 and Saturday Oct 1 in Princeton, NJ. with dozens of TVRs present.

There will be several Canadians travelling to it, and, as I understand it, even a nutcase flying in from the UK wink

Details are here

Hi Bob,

I was at the TVR North America open house by John and Doug yesterday. Three of the late model Griffiths were there as well as the only righthand drive Cerbera in Canada. A red 1996 4.2 RR, recently brought over from England. I t should be at the Bronte car show today if you are interested.

I have no problem with the Tuscan in Aus (so far). I have a copy of Graham Varleys Sagaris manual which covers most of the engine issues. Any decent mechanic ought to be able to work on the car so I do not see it as a problem, I use the local Jag specialist. There are a few things which are difficult to source but they can be imported from the UK (air filter for instance).
