Oil Additives for use in TVRs
Discussion
I was approached by a company selling a product called 'Metabond' over the NEC Classic Car Show weekend with a view to a TVRCC members offer and competition.
The demo they showed me was impressive but I'm very aware that there have been issues in the past with other additives such as 'Slick 50' causing as many problems as they solve and hearing the advice that if you maintain your car properly with the recommended oil changes then there is nothing they can add.
I suggested that they spoke to Dom with regards to what the effects may be on the Speed 6 but as in my other post about Octane Boosters I was wondering if anyone had any experience of these and whether this product is any different to the Slick 50 types or just the same thing repackaged?

Here's some links to the research and complaints about Slick 50, which I add may or may not work with completly different compounds to the Metabond.

....used in this sense....
....the most common usage of the phrase is as a derogatory term for quack medicine. The expression is also applied metaphorically to any product with questionable and/or unverifiable quality or benefit.
It would be a shame to see a competition and members offer for this type of thing in Sprint magazine.
There are proven approaches to looking after your engine, and I don't think this is one of them.
Ignoring any quackery, the argument against it which works for me, is that none of the big oil or car manufacturers use such products. Given the focus on developing efficient cars, if someone has a £20 product that makes everything X% better, they would be all over it.

The purpose of this post (also the one on the TVRCC forums) and the hopefully ensuing thread was/is to gain a wider view and opinions of its value to members/owners rather than me just making a unilateral decision before discussing or dismissing it. Dont touch any additives for oils if you use the correct grade of oil as ive said before millers 20/60 CSS semi synthetic wich has the correct amount of ZDDP anti scuffing agent and is recommended for flat tappet applications read there web site tech info.

The demo they showed me was impressive.....
Firstly, I'm fairly sure that the operator has a foot pedal or some other remote switch that reduces the torque produced by the motor on demand without you noticing.
Secondly, the additive is basically a derivative of a machining oil which is designed for high surface pressure lubrication but it totally unsuitable for hydrodynamic bearing lubrication of the type found in an engine.
Thirdly, oil companies spend billions on oil development, as well as manufacturers and also racing teams. If this product was so amazing for so little money, do you not think it would be used by everyone and the product would be a well known product.
This belongs in the same bin as those electric superchargers and "magnetic" fuel conditioners.
If it seems to good to be true.......
Additives which 'improve' or 'enhance' the oil seem pointless! Oils these days are very sophisticated and if there was some additional additive which would improve them the oil companies would add it as a matter of course.
Additives which can repair wear or damage by plating with metal or ceramics would be of great benefit to old/worn/hammered engines... if they work!!

Maybe going a little "off topic" but where does the classic STP fit into all this oil additive stuff?
Nearly every American dragster or race car had its obligatory STP sticker (so I guess they did actually use it) in the 60's and 70's. Did it have a place back then when oil technology wasn't so advanced? Not required in these days of synthetic oils?
Thanks for the replies.I was looking for opinions and to see if anyone knew if there had been further developments from the Slick 50 days, obviously not.
Like I said the demo was impressive on the face of it and was slightly different from the one outlined above but I was aware that demos like that always highlight or present the product in a way that bears no relation to real life.
Perhaps more telling is that I've asked for more in-depth information and heard nothing, so it won't be featuring in Sprint.

from the website
"Metabond treatments forms in chemical way a smooth coating on the metal surfaces in friction. This layer of a molecule resists to the thoughest conditions. Prevents metal to metal contacts on moving parts, in this way reducing wears."
if this convinced you I have have a bridge I'd like to sell you...
