Which Octane boosters?

While I was helping on the TVRCC stand at the NEC Classic last weekend I was asked that question a couple of times and I had to admit I'd never really looked into them and didn't know what was a good brand or indeed if they actually work.

Anyone with experience or advice on these?

The one I use sometimes is nos racing,it says it takes it up six points but its not cheap at 21 pds per tank but it does create more pops and bangs on the overrun and it seems to make mine more responsive

Which Octane boosters?

None...........

Unless you want to clog up your injectors.

Absolutely pointless in a Rover V8 with a standard distributor ignition system in my opinion.

Go Tesco's 99 Ron or Shell V-Power if you want, you may just be able to squeeze a couple more degrees of advance if you are setting it up on these two fuels.

I set my timing at 28 deg at 3500-4000 rpm and an idle of somewhere between 10-14 with the vac advance disconnected.

My Chim runs very happily on 95 Ron like this with no detonation under load & no noticeable loss of performance over the higher octane fuels.

My Griff definitely runs much better on Shell V-Power 99RON compared to normal Shell 95RON.

With regards to octane booster I haven't really noticed any difference in running or performance but if you use it in conjunction with hi octane fuels you do get some epic flames out the back!

I've used octane boosters in the past with turbo charged cars running decent boost pressures and experienced sharper throttle response and quicker pick up at low revs. I had a MK2 Toyota MR2 in the early 90's that was transformed by using 97 super unleaded instead of standard 95. The difference was amazing, but 97 octane was few and far between in those days and most cars where designed to run on the 95 stuff.

Surely octane additives will have a similar effect if the ecu can adapt without re mapping ?

Still carry a bottle or two in the boot of the Tuscan just in case i cant find a shell garage for the 99 stuff.

I've used it, but only for track days to help ensure no problem with pre-ignition under max load.

I used NF Racing formula for years in my Impreza when the only petrol for sale locally was 95 RON. Never had a problem with anything, and I could run a 98 RON timing and boost map safely.

I never felt the need to use booster in the Griff. It easily makes over 300bhp on 95 RON fuel.
