I polished mine up a long while back.. took a long time to remove all the coating and get it back to the metal, then with the dremel I polished it up with some meguirs polish and brasso..

Start off with some course wet and dry, then move to a finer grain until you can start polishing by hand and then maybe using something like a dremel (made things a million times easier for me!)

You could always do what I did and buy a standard new one.

The easy way is to get a bolt that fits into the gear knob cut the head off, screw it into the gear knob then fit it into a drill.
I used eighty grit to start with, then use some 1500 wet and dry to get it polished and finish with a scouring pad for a matt finish looked as good as new.

Correct and it also looks better in its original form IMHO.

Maybe, but then its a free way of refurbing your gearknob, and I found it easier to polish it then to try and replicate the original finish (no idea how to do so) smile

Albeit not original, but imho a polished knob still looks better than a scruffy knob hehe

You could always rub it back and prime paint it?

Might do this to mine as it look rubbish as well.

I thought about painting it, then thought it will only get scratched over time and look cack.. I prefer metal to look like metal though, but just couldn't replicate the original finish (which I did attempt if you look at the progress pics)..

As I mentioned, use a scouring pad to get the mat finish, mine is exactly like new.
