Have you ever removed springs from the dampers?

Due to the compact style of the coilover springs there is not much room to get spring compressors between the coils. I have already removed, renovated and re-assembled the rear shocks using double hook compressors from Halfords, but I had to hack-saw part of the hooks off to get them in and then only one hook at each end could be used because the spring circumference was too small.

It is difficult to get even pressure to stop the spring doing a banana impression and I am counting ratchet turns to keep it the same both sides.

Now, I'm considering getting single hook compressors although I could probably muddle through with the two hook ones I've got. Anyone got any experience of how they did it? Did you use two or three single hook at each end compressors and what make will fit the coils?

I presume that the sticky tape is to prevent scratching the spring.

Just been doing this, this evening, racked my brains how to fit the springs, two sets of spring compressors and no joy lol

TBH Ant you're going to struggle with any spring compressor as the gap between spring and damper body is so tight.

Graham's setup is lovely...... if you've got the time to build, there is a short cut though....

Assuming fitting a spring..

Compress the spring using spring compressors, then use metal cable tie's (Panduit tie's), wrap these around the spring to keep it compressed. This evening I used 10 metal ties per spring, probably overkill, worked a treat

You don't have to compress the spring much to be able to fit it over the damper

Remove the spring compressors and fit the spring over the coilover. Fit the collar and then wind up the adjustable platform to clamp the spring.

Once you're ready, cut the tie's off, job done!!

Last tie goes with a bit of a kick but nothing to it really.

I used 2 joiners cramps lieing them on the bench, worked a treat!

Same but different, I used two small ratchet straps.

You can actually use them to compress the spring as well, little bit at a time each side.

Innovative ideas chaps. I'll give the straps a go as this seems the simplest method to start.
