Has anyone found any information on the relative merits/demerits of each in so far as use on an RV8 is concerned?

There's a local (ish) company to where I live who do a Canems ECU conversion and a local (ish) company to my parents who do a Megasquirt ECU conversion plus I know that people on here have used Emeralds too ... just trying to get a handle on which is the better unit to go for.

Cheers

Phil

(And yes, I do have a long list of stuff that I "need" to do ... )

I rate emerald , I have used there stuff for years as have lots of my customers , there customer services are second to none !! Always help you when needed and they do there own Dyno set up . I can't see the point in mega squirt as fo the money get a proper ecu that will Fo all you need and more , take all the things into account when you price it up they do a fixed rate dyno set up . There ecu does have lots of functions and more in the pipe line which they will update for you at a later point for little money .

Emerald, The previous owner of my wedge had an (early) emerald unit, which he rated A+, I drove other wedges prior to buying it and went for it because of the way it ran. After a few years of happy ownership the 4.0 ltr decided time to die! So in went a new 4.6 etc etc, But the trusty Emerald was kept, it even ran on the same map, but after a 1500 mile run in period, a trip to emerald and a remap, yes the service is first class and after the remap, what a change. First class, yes recommended and my unit is proof they dont go wrong and can be remapped. smile ps that was two years ago and still bril

Well, if I don't get this misfire sorted over the winter since going MS, I shall either try Emerald or go back to distributor depending on work as I don't enjoy driving the car any more. mad

I can understand your frustration there but that has to either be down to a fault in the actual unit itself or a flaw in the programming? I would have thought that a simple swapover of ECU (with the existing programming squirted up into it) would rule the ECU itself out.

I assume it didn't have the misfire before the MS?

Don't be too quick to blame the MS ECU or any other electronics. When I converted my wedge to MS wasted spark, after a year of running on fuel only, I had a misfire and convinced myself it was electronic before I eventually tracked it down to a f@cked cam.

Check out Daxtojero on PH he helped me a huge amount.

FYI - J.K.M. Performance in Portsmouth supply, fit and map Emerald ECUs on their Dyno Dynamics RR. They did a great job on my car, and are reasonably close to you. PM me if you want any more info.

If I recall correctly, your missfire is coming from the EDIS module and being sent as false triggering to the MS ECU. If thats the case then its not an ECU issue and it will be present with any EDIS based setup if you don't cure it.

EMail me directly if you need any more help with it, it is cureable as no one would run MS ECUs if they miss fired,
cheers

So have you settled on the Emerald?

What made you go for that over Canems or Megasquirt?

To be honest Phil, the problem i have is i dont know whats worth the money?

As you know drive the car on limited mileage unlike yourself who yous her every day.

All i want is the best out of the old girl everytime i take her out.

Shes had the engine rebuild at V8D, and she drives great, but i would like to get the best out of the engine without the faff of setting up etc......picture the Steve McQueen moment when he takes the cover off and takes the car out......not what setup do i need today etc before i go out...there fore do i leave the original ECU setup that i have already, or is there a next stage to that, that will do for me....emarald seems alot simpler?????

Having had the odd poor running session on my 400SE I've always found a bit of tweeking puts things right for a while, but then the issues return. The hydrocarbons are all over the place at tickover as well. More than once I've considered fitting a carb instead, but many on here speak well of the Emerald system. Does anyone have any idea what the conversion would cost including set-up?

If you want something in there that works then the plug and play MS systems from phil/v8d will be one way to go. Don't under-estimate the costs of doing bespoke installs .. some of the emerald installs I did came in at 2k+ with all the bells and whistles.. basically a grand and a bit on parts and the rest in labour / mapping / general faffing around etc . If you're handy at home you could get a full working install in there for 1k including mapping? If you kept the dizzy and coil you could get away with slightly less. If you're paying someone to make a bespoke wiring loom, coil pack brackets, HT leads, get the tacho working properly etc etc then that's a lot of labour right there ..
Fortunately there's some people who think it's worth it and when you're chasing really big numbers you've really got little other choice.

If you don't have a problem then why change it?

I'm only looking at changing mine because I have that "slight issue" of the bugger cutting out on me *STONE DEAD* or not revving beyond 4,500rpm or spluttering and dying seemingly at random but obviously feeling like it's mainly when you're either overtaking something or in teh outside lane of a motorway with nowhere to nip in easily and I've pretty much exhausted every other possibility...

The old 14CUX *SHOULD* be perfectly reliable so if yours is then why bugger with it - after all it has been in hundreds of thousands of Range Rovers. biggrin

Thing is - I'm not "chasing big numbers", I just want to stop the little darling deciding that we need a comfort break when I really want it's heart to be racing and not my ring to be clenching...
