The Tuscan Challenge cars have side pipes and yes, heat is a problem.
In the race cars we have to heavily insulate the exhaust tunnel as otherwise the heat goes directly into the compartment containing the fuel tank and pumps. Warm fuel = less power.
On the raod car conversions when the fuel tank is moved to the back of the car, the problem then becomes passenger comfort.
I know Grant Tuscan on here had complaints from passengers about the heat, and we spent some time the weekend before Combe putting more heat reflective material in there to reduce the problem.
The biggest problem for a road car is the size of the sill required to accomodate the exhausts. On the Tuscan we ended up with a half door - which is fine for a race car, but not so acceptable for a road car.

One other problem with side pipes on V8's is that usually one bank of cylinders exits from one side and the other from the other. Hence Westfiled SEiGHt's sound crap when they are passing you. Great from the inside though when the effect can be heard in stereo.

I think he meant the huge gap between the wheel and the bodywork, looking like a 4x4 TVR. I think it's to do with accessing mechanical parts during a race.

I was thinking more of the large gap between the tyres and top of the arches...
I wondered if it was because the ride height on that silver 12 had been jacked up to allow it to drive on the road.
If you look at the front spoiler it kind of looks like you would want to lower the car a couple of inches on a circuit so that it is only just clearing the tarmac.
The increased gap would probably help with air flow and tyre cooling when travelling at 200MPH!!!!
The old D-Types when they took them to the Indy 500 absolutely creamed the Indy cars for the first few laps and then the tyres over heated due to having no air flow around them.
